Best Heart Rate Monitors for Workouts
Seeing your heart rate rise and settle during a workout can help put the effort into context. A steady bike ride, a brisk uphill walk and a short burst of squats can feel quite different, and a heart rate monitor gives you another way to follow that effort. Paired with a compatible app or watch, it lets you watch the numbers as you exercise and look back over the session afterwards. You can make it part of your workout routine without wearing a tracker for the rest of the day.
These chest straps and armbands offer different ways to do that. Here’s what each brings to a workout, and what to consider before choosing one.

Before you choose
Choose how you want to wear it—and where the workout will go
A sensor can measure your heart rate without being able to save a workout. Getting both the fit and the recording setup right matters more than buying the longest feature list.

Chest strap or armband?
A chest strap reads the heart’s electrical activity through electrodes against your skin. The Polar H10 is a useful starting point for intervals and other sessions where you want to follow changes in effort. Its Pro Strap has silicone grip dots, but a chest belt still needs a snug fit and moistened electrodes. It may feel awkward under a sports bra or during exercises that press the pod into the floor.
An optical armband uses light to detect changes in blood flow. The COROS Heart Rate Monitor and Polar Verity Sense keep the sensor away from your chest and wrist, which may be a more appealing arrangement for everyday training. They still need close skin contact. Movement, placement and tattoos can affect optical readings, so an armband is not an automatic accuracy upgrade for every exercise.
Neither format is flawless. Polar says the H10’s electrical chest measurement is more reliable when heart rate changes quickly. That helps explain the design difference, but it does not prove that one sensor is most accurate in every workout. Polar’s sensor comparison explains the distinction.
Match it to the app, watch or machine you actually use
Bluetooth and ANT+ are the wireless connections used to send heart rate to another device. Check that your exact watch, training app or gym machine accepts an external heart rate sensor using one of those connections. Having Bluetooth for headphones does not establish heart-rate compatibility, and pairing a sensor does not mean every app on the device can use it.
For a phone app and bike computer running together, the number of simultaneous Bluetooth connections can matter. Wahoo TRACKR, Garmin HRM 200, Garmin HRM 600 and the COROS Heart Rate Monitor each support three. Polar H10 supports two when dual Bluetooth is enabled; Polar Verity Sense also supports two, while Polar H9 supports one. COROS is the only model here without ANT+, so it is a poor fit for a setup that depends on it.
Pair inside the app or device’s sensor menu, following its instructions. For Polar Flow, use the in-app pairing process rather than pairing the H10 in your phone’s general Bluetooth settings. A quick test session is a good way to confirm that the intended app is both receiving and saving the data.
Decide whether you want to leave your phone and watch behind
If a watch or nearby phone already records every workout, you may have no use for memory inside the sensor. Polar H9, Wahoo TRACKR, Garmin HRM 200 and the COROS Heart Rate Monitor all need a compatible receiver to record their heart-rate stream. Moving out of range does not turn them into independent recorders.
The Polar H10 can hold one session, but you must start its “Save HR with sensor” feature in Polar Beat before leaving the phone. The Polar Verity Sense is more convenient for repeated sessions without a receiver: after initial setup, select recording mode on the sensor itself and sync to Polar Flow later. The Garmin HRM 600 also offers standalone activity recording, started through Garmin Connect.
Recording heart rate alone does not give you a GPS route. For running or cycling maps, you still need an appropriate phone, watch or bike computer to record location.
Check the size and the care routine
Measure around the body where the strap will sit and use the maker’s fit chart. Strap length laid flat and the chest circumference it fits are different measurements. The linked Polar H10 and Polar H9 are M–XXL bundles; the Garmin HRM 200 and HRM 600 are M–XL. Choose the correct retailer size rather than assuming that a familiar clothing label will fit.
All the chest monitors here have removable modules, so the washable textile part can be replaced separately. Wahoo TRACKR needs hand-washing; the Polar and Garmin chest straps permit machine-washing with the module removed, following their care instructions. That is a useful everyday difference if you train often.
Polar H10, Polar H9 and Garmin HRM 200 use replaceable coin cells. Wahoo TRACKR, Garmin HRM 600 and both armbands are rechargeable. The COROS Heart Rate Monitor standard band fits arms 18–32 cm around; its larger band is a separate size choice. Choose a size you can wear snugly and follow the maker’s cleaning routine.
For swimming, look beyond the water-resistance rating
Bluetooth and ANT+ do not provide useful transmission underwater. A water-resistance rating does not by itself promise a usable heart-rate record while swimming. The Polar Verity Sense has a dedicated pool mode and an included goggle clip: it reads at the right temple, stores the session and syncs afterwards. Set the pool length for its distance and pace calculations.
The Garmin HRM 600 can store underwater heart rate and add it to an activity recorded on a compatible Garmin device after the swim. Check that your exact watch supports that workflow. The Polar H10 can also record a session in memory, but it needs the Beat setup and a secure chest fit; pool or sea water can interfere with its electrodes. Wahoo TRACKR and the COROS Heart Rate Monitor are not supported for swimming.
Choose for the recording method you will use, rather than treating “30 metres” or “50 metres” as a diving-depth promise.

Polar H10
A versatile chest strap for varied workouts
The H10 is a good place to start if you want workout heart rate without committing to a particular watch brand. It uses electrical sensing at the chest and can send readings to two Bluetooth receivers when dual Bluetooth is enabled, as well as ANT+ equipment. That gives you room to use a compatible phone app alongside a watch or bike computer.
The Pro Strap is one reason to choose the H10. Its silicone grip dots help it stay in position, and the textile strap can be washed or replaced without replacing the sensor. Our H10 review found it secure once tightened and unobtrusive during home workouts. That review also records frustrating app reconnections and a release clip that felt fiddly after exercise.
For Polar’s own app setup, pair the H10 inside Flow. Recording to its onboard memory uses a separate Polar Beat workflow. That split is the main complication: you can leave the phone behind after starting, but there is space for only one session, which needs downloading before the next. Its replaceable CR2025 battery is rated for up to 400 hours. Detach and dry the pod after use to avoid unnecessary drain.
Choose it for the combination of strap, connections and memory. If you only need one Bluetooth connection and always record on another device, Polar H9 is the simpler alternative.
Polar Verity Sense
An armband that can record on its own
Verity Sense is the more flexible armband here if you sometimes exercise without a phone or watch. After setting it up with Polar Flow, you can switch to recording mode on the sensor, do the session and sync afterwards. Its memory holds up to 600 hours of heart-rate data, so it is not restricted to the H10’s single saved workout.
Wear it snugly on the upper arm or forearm for ordinary exercise. For pool swimming, the included clip places it against the right temple under your goggles. Pool mode uses turns and your selected pool length to calculate distance and pace; it is not an open-water GPS tracker.
It also broadcasts over ANT+ and two Bluetooth connections, making it useful when you do want live readings on other equipment. Polar quotes up to 30 hours per charge. The small button and mode lights deserve a quick check before starting: broadcasting, recording and swimming are different modes.
Pick it for that flexibility rather than an assurance that optical readings will match a chest strap in every interval. If all you need is a Bluetooth armband feeding your existing watch, the COROS Heart Rate Monitor has fewer modes to manage.
Polar H9
A simpler Polar chest strap
The H9 makes sense when your routine is straightforward: put on a chest strap, start a workout on your phone or watch, and let that device record it. It uses the same electrical-measurement approach as the Polar H10, with Bluetooth, ANT+ and 5 kHz GymLink connections.
The included Soft Strap is different from the H10’s Pro Strap. You do not get the Pro’s silicone grip dots, and the H9 supports only one Bluetooth receiver at a time. That still leaves ANT+ available for compatible equipment, but it is a limit if you want two Bluetooth devices receiving together.
There is no memory to catch a workout when your phone or watch is absent. In return, the feature set is easy to understand and the CR2025 battery is rated for up to 400 hours. The module detaches for cleaning and the strap is replaceable.
It is a sensible shortlist entry for one-receiver workouts. Compare the Garmin HRM 200 if you want a replaceable battery with three Bluetooth connections, or move to the H10 if its Pro Strap and single-session memory are features you will use.
Wahoo TRACKR HEART RATE
A rechargeable chest strap for several devices
TRACKR suits someone who moves between indoor training, a bike computer and a phone app. It supports three simultaneous Bluetooth connections alongside ANT+, giving it more room for connected equipment than a single-Bluetooth strap.
The rechargeable battery is its other clear distinction. Wahoo rates it for over 100 active hours, and the included cable connects magnetically to the pod from a USB-C power source. You are not opening a coin-cell compartment, but you do need to keep track of that cable and dry the contacts before charging. The battery is not user-replaceable.
Status lights help with connection and battery checks. The strap detaches for cleaning, although Wahoo specifies hand-washing rather than putting it in the machine. Its stated fit reaches chests up to 50 inches; check the included strap guidance if you are near the limit.
The main limitation is recording: TRACKR sends the data, while your app or device saves it. It has no onboard workout memory and is not supported for swimming. Choose the Polar H10 if occasional independent recording matters more than recharging; choose TRACKR if your receiver is always with you.
COROS Heart Rate Monitor
A straightforward Bluetooth armband
The COROS armband is appealing if you want to move the sensor away from your chest and let your existing watch or app handle the workout. Wear detection wakes the sensor when you put it on, so there is no workout mode to select on the band itself.
It fits on the upper arm and sends heart rate to as many as three Bluetooth receivers. You do not need a COROS watch, but your chosen receiver must accept an external Bluetooth heart-rate sensor. There is no ANT+ connection. The standard band linked here fits arms 18–32 cm around; a larger band is available separately.
COROS quotes up to 38 hours of active use per charge. The sensor removes from the band for cleaning, and the band needs to stay snug without sliding. As with other optical sensors, placement and tattoos can affect the signal.
Be clear about the app: the COROS app manages the sensor and its updates; it does not directly record the heart-rate stream from this band. A compatible watch or third-party recording app is still needed. There is no onboard memory or swim support. If leaving every receiver behind is the attraction, Polar Verity Sense is the more suitable armband.

Garmin HRM 200
A replaceable battery with three Bluetooth connections
The HRM 200 is worth comparing if you want the connected-device flexibility of three Bluetooth channels but would rather replace a battery occasionally than charge a sensor. It also supports ANT+, so its basic heart-rate role extends beyond Garmin watches.
Garmin rates the CR2032 battery for up to a year at one hour of use per day. The module comes off for washing, and the strap’s adjustment slider doubles as the tool for opening the battery cover. There are two strap sizes; the linked M–XL is specified for a chest circumference of 80–119 cm, while XS–S covers 60–85 cm.
Use open mode with third-party apps or ANT+ equipment; secure Bluetooth is for compatible Garmin devices. If a third-party receiver cannot find the strap, check the connection mode before ruling out compatibility.
The HRM 200 sends heart rate and heart-rate variability data to compatible receivers, but it does not add standalone activity recording, running dynamics or stored swim heart rate. If those are your reason for buying Garmin, compare the Garmin HRM 600. For an ordinary workout already recorded by a watch or app, the HRM 200 does the simpler job.
Garmin HRM 600
Extra training data for a compatible Garmin setup
The HRM 600 is the specialist option here for someone who will use more than a heart-rate number. With a compatible Garmin watch it can provide running dynamics, including measures of stride and ground contact, as well as indoor running pace and distance. Step speed loss needs a supported watch connected through secure Bluetooth.
Garmin Connect can start a timed recording of up to 24 hours, and the phone may then leave range. Recording will not start or continue below 5% battery. For swimming, a separate Garmin workflow stores heart rate on the strap during an activity started on a compatible watch, then transfers the data after you leave the water. Check the exact watch’s support before buying for stored swim heart rate.
The removable module recharges using a Garmin cable, with battery life rated for up to two months at one hour a day. The detached strap is machine-washable under Garmin’s instructions and comes in two sizes; the linked M–XL fits a chest circumference of 80–119 cm.
Basic heart-rate broadcasting still works with compatible third-party Bluetooth and ANT+ receivers, but that does not bring all the Garmin features with it. If you only plan to view heart rate in a phone app, the Garmin HRM 200 or Wahoo TRACKR is a more straightforward comparison. The HRM 600 is most compelling when your existing setup can use its extras.
Before you use it
Use the numbers alongside how you feel
These are workout sensors, not a way to diagnose a heart problem or decide that it is safe to push through symptoms. Age-based heart-rate targets are general estimates. If you have a heart condition or take medication that affects your pulse, ask your clinician which exercise targets are appropriate for you. American Heart Association guidance.

Making your choice
Pick the monitor that fits the way you train
The Polar H10 is a strong starting point if you are happy wearing a chest strap and want broad connectivity with the option to save a session. If you mostly want heart rate sent to a watch or app, Polar H9 keeps the essentials, while Wahoo TRACKR makes sense if you prefer recharging to replacing a coin cell.
For an armband, choose between the COROS Heart Rate Monitor for straightforward Bluetooth broadcasting and Polar Verity Sense for independent recording or pool sessions. The Garmin HRM 600 earns its place when you will use the extra Garmin training features; Garmin HRM 200 is the simpler choice when you mainly need heart rate. Start with the device that will record your workouts, check the fit, and buy the features you expect to use.
