The PlayMakar MVP percussion massager is a hand-held electric self-massage device. Also called a massage gun, it delivers a powerful, high-intensity massage through deep-penetrating pulses that hammer into your muscle tissue wherever you apply the device.
With 6 speeds and 6 interchangeable massage heads, plus a lightweight feel and low noise level, the PlayMakar MVP succeeds where many competing models fail.
In this post, we’ll look at the features and attributes that make the PlayMakar MVP massager a great purchase, as well as some of its weaknesses to be aware of.
We’ll dive into everything you need to know about owning and using this device, as well as offer alternatives if in case the model isn’t right for you.
We’ll also take it for a test run, disclose our findings and most importantly of all; determine whether it is a quality buy or not.
What Is The PlayMakar MVP Percussion Massager?
With 20 years of experience, PlayMakar developed the MVP Percussion Massager with athletes in mind.
With its ability to rapidly loosen and warm muscles and increase blood flow, the device is ideal for use before and after training.
However, anyone with muscle tightness, tension, stiffness or pain can benefit from using it.
Whether you have an acute tendonitis condition or upper body tightness from working at the computer, PlayMakar’s percussion massage gun can help relieve pain and increase your range of movement. It pushes out lactic acid, bringing fresh blood into the muscle tissue. It also helps lower inflammation and unknot fibres in your muscle tissue and fascia that have been strained.
if you are looking to feel looser, less stiff and more flexible, the PlayMakar MVP Percussion Massager could be what you are looking for.
Things to Consider Before Buying a Percussion Massage Gun
Before we review the PlayMakar MVP Percussion Massager, we need to determine what makes a good buy when buying a massage gun?
Here’s what to consider when looking at choosing the best massage guns.
Ease of Use
Before you decide on a model, you should know how much it weighs. Most percussion massage guns weigh between 2 and 3 pounds.
If you’re looking for a lighter option, the PlayMakar MVP is actually just 2 pounds.
If you know your arm will get tired after a few minutes of holding a 3-pound massage gun, then opt for a lighter model.
Does the device have a handle that’s easy to grip and comfortable enough to hold for long periods of use?
Since the results you get depend on being able to use the device properly, these are important considerations.
How much intensity do you need for a satisfying massage? Some people need a device with enough power to penetrate tough, thick bands of muscle tissue that have hardened over time.
You pay for the extra power, so if you don’t actually require the high-intensity level, you probably can save money buying a massage gun that does the job with less power.
Would a loud power drill noise bother you when you’re working out kinks in your back or kneading out tightness in your calves?
Percussion guns that don’t have a noise reduction feature are seriously loud, and that can get in the way of a good massage for some users.
If you do get a model with noise reduction, like the PlayMakar massager, you can enjoy a quiet massage and not bother anyone else in your home.
You’ll want to see how many attachment heads a device comes with. The more the better, because more attachment heads means more versatility.
You have different sizes and shapes for different body parts, allowing you to get more use out of the device. Since percussion guns drive powerful pulses into your muscle tissue, the size of the attachment head can affect the intensity of pressure you feel on your muscle.
Quality and Warranty
When you invest in a massage gun, you’re bound to shell out over $100. That said, you want it to last.
Keep in mind, however, it’s an electric device, invulnerable to wearing out over time or breaking down altogether. You need a model made with a durable design out of quality materials.
Brands that include longer warranties with their products tend to make products that are higher in quality. Devices with short warranties are often made with cheap, breakable material and poor craftsmanship.
PlayMakar MVP Features and Benefits
According to PlayMakar’s website, the brand is devoted to developing devices supported by medical research to serve athletes in need of training and recovery tools to optimize performance and recovery.
There are many features of this percussion massage gun that makes it professional-grade and optimal for physical therapists and athletes alike.
6 Attachment Heads
The PlayMakar MVP comes with 6 interchangeable attachment heads that make the tool extremely versatile because you can use it virtually anywhere on your body.
It has large and small spherical heads, a spade-shaped head designed for your cervical spine, a forked head for massaging either side of your spine and a flat head attachment for any muscle.
10 mm Percussion Strokes at 6 Adjustable Speeds
With 10 mm length strokes, this massage gun delivers much more than a vibration. Moving nearly a half-inch each time it pulses, the massage head on the PlayMakar is able to penetrate muscles and deliver a deep tissue massage.
In this way, it breaks up tension and forces the muscles to relax. With 6 speeds to choose from, you can adjust the intensity of the percussion according to how you feel and what your body needs.
Ergonomic Lightweight Feel
At 2 pounds, the PlayMakar is light enough to be held for ongoing use so you can get the relief you need. The grip is designed for a comfortable ergonomic hold that won’t slip as the device vibrates.
Without a cord in your way, it’s easy to use the PlayMakar with precision, applying the percussive pressure in a highly controlled way.
3 Hour Battery Life
The benefit of running on battery is that the device can be used cord-free. It’s convenient to take on-the-go without having to plug it in for use.
The PlayMakar gives you 3 hours of continuous use before it needs recharging again, so you can use it several times before you need to let it charge.
PlayMakar provides a 2-year warranty included free with the product.
If your device is defective, breaks or wears out within your first 2 years of using it, the manufacturer will replace it for you, so that you don’t lose your investment.
The Review: First Impressions & What’s in the Box?
I own a couple of percussion massagers so I was interested to see what PlayMakar’s new MVP Percussion Massager could offer to the plethora of massage guns that are now flooding the market.
The PlayMakar MVP Percussion Massager comes out of the box ready to be used. Everything is laid out from the attachment heads to the mains charger and of course the massager itself.
Apart from these core accessories that you can see in the picture below, there is nothing much else apart from a manual.
The PlayMakar MVP Percussion Massager is simple and easy to get started.
Grab an attachment head of your choice, then flick the on/off switch at the bottom. From that point on the main controls are on the LED screen at the back of the gun.
There are 6 levels and each tap of the power button on the LED screen takes you progressively through the different intensities.
The Build Quality
First off the build of the massage gun is very good. In fact better than I expected. It has a nice even weight to it and a nice mat finish to it, and it’s comfortable to hold too.
The LED screen is crystal clear and the power button on the screen is very responsive. All in all, I was very impressed with the overall build.
The attachments are also of decent quality and came with what has become the standard shaped set of 6 attachments that most massage guns seem to come with.
The attachments don’t have any cushioning, and the ones that are supposed to be soft (the two round ones) almost feel somewhat like polystyrene crossed with hard foam.
They aren’t quite as luxurious as something you’d get with the Theragun G3 PRO but I found they did the job fine.
As someone who has a lot of massage tools I am starting to build up a collection of a lot of attachment heads which are starting to get mixed up with one another so a little bag to keep them in would be nice, however, the PlayMakar MVP Percussion Massager does not come with one.
There is also no travel case that comes with the MVP Percussion Massager.
PlayMakar’s compromise is that the box it comes in resembles a travel case in some ways. I would have preferred a case so that I can throw away the box but it’s not a dealbreaker.
Currently, I do not see an option to buy a case for it, but perhaps PlayMakar will bring one out in the future.
The Massage: Is it Effective?
After having spent a few weeks using the PlayMakar MVP Percussion Massager I’ve more or less gathered my overall opinion on it.
People have different intended uses for their massagers and personally I like using them for the sole purpose of loosening up tight muscles and releasing trigger points. So this is the main criteria I am using to form my opinions.
I found the PlayMakar MVP Percussion Massager particularly useful on bony and tender areas rather than very fleshy areas as I felt it lacked some of the extreme power that some of the other massage guns have to penetrate into deeper muscle.
This could be due to its 10mm stroke range which means the hammer mechanism has less range to travel up and down.
However, this means that the PlayMakar MVP Percussion Massager feels much smoother than some of the other percussion massagers that only focus on power.
Because the PlayMakar MVP Percussion Massager is not like this, it makes it ideal for tender, delicate or very sore areas.
For example, this did wonders for my neck and releasing trigger points along the main neck muscles such as the Sternocleidomastoid.
I haven’t been able to find an effective way to relieve my tight neck muscles and the PlayMakar MVP Percussion Massager was the first massage tool to be able to do this for me.
I even found it more effective than so-called shiatsu ‘neck and shoulder massagers‘ which specialise in massaging the neck.
It also did a great job on my calves and forearms if you press down hard and run the massage head right up against the bone.
I also suffer from a lot of tightness in one of my ankles right on the ankle joint, so the rounded attachment head was soft enough and the PlayMakar MVP Percussion Massager’s intensity suitable enough for this area.
The fact that there are 6 different intensities also means that if you are very prone to soreness and can’t tolerate much pain, you’re more than likely to find the right intensity to satisfy you.
However, if you are someone who really wants the ‘thumping’ power massage and are used to a more aggressive massage then the highest level may not be intense enough for you.
I would say I am quite well ‘massaged out’ and that for my deepest trigger points it wasn’t quite enough at times. It could give me some release but I felt I could have used a little more power at times.
The fact that it may not be as powerful as some of the other massage guns isn’t a bad thing at all.
For example, the Theragun G3 PRO is considered the market leader when it comes to massage guns and has a lot of power, however, I didn’t find it as effective on my sore areas as the PlayMakar MVP Percussion Massager was.
I have tried the Theragun G3 PRO on my neck in the past and it was too hard and did not have the smoothness of the PlayMakar MVP Percussion Massager. This is the advantage of the PlayMakar MVP Percussion Massager has over the massage guns that only focus on power.
In addition, unlike other percussion massagers, the PlayMakar MVP Percussion Massager is very quiet in comparison to the competition.
In my opinion, it does pass the TV watching test; which is the ability to use it and watch TV and use it at the same time. Most other massage guns don’t pass this test as they are far too loud.
This makes the PlayMakar MVP Percussion Massager a great massager to use at any time of the day, even at night or early morning when everyone else in your home is still asleep.
This is one of the main selling points of the PlayMakar MVP Percussion Massager.
Comfort & Battery Life
The PlayMakar MVP Percussion Massager is also very pleasant to use.
It is very comfortable to hold and has a good weight to it so it’s unlikely your arm is going to get tired after holding it like the heavy Theragun G3 PRO.
In terms of battery life, the PlayMakar MVP Percussion Massager is very impressive. I found a fully charged battery lasts a long time.
I used it for very long sessions every day for a week before the battery became drained which means there is no real need to worry about additional batteries.
It does, however, take quite a long time to charge. You’re likely looking at around 5 hours or so.
I already covered what my first impressions of the attachments were like, but how did they feel?
The arrangements of the attachments were generally very good. There are enough options to get the type of percussion massage you need.
However, a problem I found was that they don’t ‘click in’ to the head of the PlayMakar MVP Percussion Massager, which means they often rotate unexpectedly.
For instance, if you are using the spade or the fork shaped heads, they begin to spin and rotate which can be annoying as you have to constantly straighten them out.
Furthermore, I found that some of them begin to make a rattling sound as they don’t fit snuggly enough at the higher intensities. Despite this flaw, they never were at risk of popping out of the massage gun during a massage session.
What Do Others Say?
Users love the PlayMakar MVP massager for the low noise and for how well it works in a number of areas where trigger points can arise.
As far as its quality and durability go, users say the device itself is well made with solid construction (which I agree).
However, they say the attachment heads are made with foam and it’s a little more vulnerable to wear and tear.
I would add that the two-round attachments are the only ones made of foam-like material and could do with an upgrade in quality. I did find they did the job despite the quality concerns, however.
Overall, users are happy with the results they get from using the device, especially considering its affordable price.
Should You Buy the PlayMakar MVP Percussion Massager?
Whether you should buy the PlayMakar MVP Percussion Massager depends on a number of factors but the most important one is what kind of power are you looking for? Are you very sore? Is this your first percussion massager? How much power do you need?
If you are already very well ‘massaged out’ and frequently use powerful massagers then you may want something more powerful than the PlayMakar MVP Percussion Massager.
If on the other hand, you are looking for something that isn’t only power-focused (but also quiet) then the PlayMakar MVP Percussion Massager is a good option.
You’ll find that with the PlayMakar MVP Percussion Massager you’ll get a much smoother and relaxing massage than the more powerful massage guns.
Again I’ll point an important fact out.
How powerful you find a percussion massager is dependent on how tight you are and how often you use massagers. I am sure that a lot of users will find the PlayMakar MVP Percussion Massager has plenty of power.
But for me, I have been using the Theragun G3 PRO in the past so relative to that, the PlayMakar MVP Percussion Massager is less powerful.
However, since the PlayMakar MVP Percussion Massager has 6 intensities you’ll be able to find the right intensity you need especially if you have never used a massage gun before.
Even though I feel I need more of a powerful massage these days I still feel that the PlayMakar MVP Percussion Massager will become a very important part of my future myofascial release tool kit and is the perfect complement to the more powerful massage guns.
I have found that when I watch TV at night I’ll switch it on and massage my neck and run it along my limbs to get a bit of blood circulation going and a gentle massage.
This used to be the job of my PureWave CM-07 but I much prefer the PlayMakar MVP Percussion Massager now.
I also feel that if you are looking for a recovery tool for post-workout then the PlayMakar MVP Percussion Massager should also be able to provide you with the relief you need.
Overall, I am very pleased with the PlayMakar MVP Percussion Massager and feel that it is a quality piece of equipment. But what is one of the most stand out things about it is the value.
The PlayMakar MVP Percussion Massager is great value for money.
After using the unit for one session you can feel it’s a quality piece of equipment.
If anything PlayMakar could have put it in a nicer box and packaging, perhaps added a nice case and could have charged a lot more.
The value of PlayMakar MVP Percussion Massager is in its price (assuming it doesn’t rocket up in the near future).
If you want value then you won’t find much better than the PlayMakar MVP Percussion Massager. It really is great value for money and will make a fine addition to any massage tool kit.
Alternatives to the PlayMakar MVP
If you’ve determined the PlayMakar MVP isn’t the right fit for you, here are some potential alternatives:
Theragun G3 Pro
The Theragun G3 Pro is the most expensive but powerful percussion gun on the market, packing 60 pounds of force in each pulse. If you need more intensity than the PlayMakar can provide, this is for you.
Another difference is that the Theragun G3 Pro adjusts to different angles so you can reach more areas of your body with ease. However, there are only 2 speeds, whereas the PlayMakar has 6.
This gives you more options to choose the intensity you want, whereas the Theragun G3 Pro is almost exclusively for people who need something heavy-duty.
The PlayMakar MVP Percussion Massager is however much better value for money.
The PureWave CM-07 is a percussion massager that isn’t a percussion gun but works in a similar way to loosen up muscle tissue and relieve pain.
It doesn’t pack as much power as a massage gun, but it’s lightweight, cheaper, and is still highly versatile, with 6 different attachment heads.
It even has a face massage head, which you can use to apply your face serum or moisturizer.
When used at a gentle vibration setting, this attachment head can be used to help skincare products penetrate your epidermal layers and work more effectively.
If you want something with less power than the PlayMakar MVP Percussion Massager this could be for you. However, I find the PlayMakar MVP Percussion Massager more effective than the Purewave.
“Shiatsu” means “finger pressure” in Japanese.
Shiatsu massagers refers to devices that mimic a masseuse’s hands by kneading and applying moving pressure. You can find various types of shiatsu massagers that operate when plugged in or cordless with batteries.
Some are smaller and target a specific area like your neck or lumbar back. Others are designed to massage your neck and shoulders at the same time, and others massage your entire back when placed against your chair.
If you want a relaxing, hands-free massage without the work involved with holding a device or switching out attachment heads, then a shiatsu massager is a different option you might consider.
PlayMakar’s MVP percussion massager can provide relief for people with muscle tightness or pain.
It’s the perfect tool to use before and after exercise, or after a long day of sitting at a desk. Because of their high intensity, they should only be used 20 minutes at a time.
If you’re unsure about getting started with a massage gun, the PlayMakar MVP is a versatile and highly adjustable model for beginners.
Not only that but it’s great value for money and comes with a 2-year warranty.
If you want a mid-ranged price massage gun then the MVP Percussion Massager is a great option you won’t be disappointed with.
