Hovering around the $500 mark, the Schwinn 270 Recumbent Bike does represent good value for money. You can get bikes with the same amount of features for cheaper, but with the Schwinn 270, you get a well-respected brand name and good customer support too.
Reliability & Warranty: 3.5/5
Amazon reviews for the Schwinn 270 Recumbent Bike indicate that the bike is reliable and will last you a long time, however, there appear to be occasions where the bike arrives faulty. Although this is the last thing you would want when you open up your brand new bike, Schwinn should happily replace the bike.
One of the ways to avoid such a mishap happening is to pay a little bit more for professional assembly of the bike. Amazon.com offers this for around $75. If anything is wrong the problem can be solved there on the spot.
When it comes to the warranty of the Schwinn 270 Recumbent Bike, it left us pretty surprised as the warranty doesn’t seem to match the coverage of similarly priced bikes.
The warranty covers 10 years for the bike frame, 2 years mechanical, 1 year electrical and only 90 days on labour. Considering that this is a bike priced at over $500, you would at least expect 1 year of labour under its warranty.
Contrast this with the NordicTrack GX 4.7 (which is priced in a similar range to the Schwinn 270 Recumbent Bike) who offer a lifetime warranty on its frame and 1-year warranty on parts and labour.
In fact, you could go as far as saying that the warranty on the Schwinn, is similar to the warranty you would expect on some cheaper bikes around the $200 mark.
It must be said however that generally the customer service is considered pretty good and the staff are professional, helpful and courteous. This is comforting should you ever have to contact them for some reason.
Stability and Quality: 4/5
The bike is well built and the frame is sturdy. There shouldn’t be too much shaking even at higher resistances and speeds.
Some people feel that although the bike is sturdy, some of the plastic casing feels a bit cheap, however, this doesn’t detract too much from the overall build quality of the Schwinn 270 Recumbent Bike and doesn’t affect the riding experience.
If there seems to be a common complaint about the Schwinn 270 Recumbent Bike it seems to be aimed at the comfortability of the seat.
For some people, the seat seems to be a bit slippery causing them to slide forward. Also, the seat does not have much padding either, which some people may find uncomfortable after sitting for too long. In addition, the backrest has been reported to be too curved for some people.
However, there are many people who find the seat comfortable. It really is down to personal preference. Should you wish to get this bike but are concerned that the seat may not be comfortable for you, you can always buy a cushion cover for your seat. It would also be a good idea to try this bike out in the store before buying.
Noise & Resistance: 4.5/5
The bike itself is very quiet even at the higher speeds and higher resistances. Should you wish to listen to music or watch TV whilst on this bike, the noise from the bike is unlikely to interfere in any way.
There are 25 levels of resistance, so there’s plenty to keep even the hardest core bikers satisfied. The Schwinn 270 Recumbent Bike does provide a smooth ride and it continues to be smooth through the changes in resistance.
The Schwinn 270 Recumbent Bike is relatively big, but given that it’s a recumbent bike that isn’t foldable, this is understandable (if you are interested in a recumbent bike that is foldable check out the Exerpeutic 400XL folding recumbent bike). There are wheels located in the front half of the bike, so it can be easily wheeled away if you do wish to move it.
Assembly is fairly easy and quick with most users having it fully assembled around the one hour mark.
The Schwinn 270 Recumbent Bike is incredibly feature-rich and has everything you’ll ever need on a home bike.
First of all, it has the three basic features that ensure a comfortable ride. The first is that it has a 3-speed fan built into the main console. The fan itself is very small so don’t expect it to keep you ice cool during intense workouts. Even at the highest setting, you’ll only get a light breeze. However, if you’re peddling at a light pace the fan is sufficient.
Right next to the fan are built in speakers from where you can listen to your music. The Schwinn advertisement describes the speakers as ’sealed acoustic chamber speakers for big quality sound,’ whilst the speakers are adequate, don’t expect cinema quality sound from them. Nonetheless, there’s always the option of using your own earphones if the speakers don’t match your expectations.
There is also a water bottle holder which is very large, so you can put in other items if you wish.
One of the features that we deem most important, especially if you are serious about monitoring your fitness improvements, is the ability to monitor your heart rate accurately. The Schwinn 270 Recumbent Bike offers heart rate monitoring through hand grips as well as the preferred method via chest straps. If you do want to use Telemetry heart rate monitoring, you will have to purchase the straps separately as they are not included.
