Recommended Equipment, Resources and Myofascial Release Tools

On this page you’ll find tools that will prove useful in improving your posture, helping with tension relief and keeping fit in general. These tools have my personal recommendation and were I ever unlucky enough to lose these items, I would go out and buy them again immediately.

I really believe that these items are incredibly effective in improving your quality of life by improving your health and also your mood.

TriggerPoint GRID Foam Roller

A foam roller is a great place to get started if you have never done myofascial release before. The larger area of a foam roller makes it much less intense than using a massage ball, however it is still very effective at releasing trigger points. What’s more is that it’s long length makes it extremely versatile and can be used all over the body.

I’ve tried a couple of different foam rollers, and the one above is the best one I have used. I’ve tried some of those cheaper generic brands on Amazon and although they do work to some degree, they cannot match the quality and effectiveness of this model. One cheaper brand I bought before even broke under the pressure of my weight over time. I am fairly confident that this foam roller will not only crack, but will be the only foam roller you are likely to need throughout your life.

As for size I went for the longer lengthed model, which does cost twice the price. The shorter one is the same density and firmness, I just preferred the longer version as it allows me to be ‘lazier’ as I don’t have to pay as much attention as trying to stay on a smaller roller.

La Crosse Massage Ball

This is a must have for everyone. The La Crosse massage ball is just the right size, density, weight and firmness which makes it perfect for releasing knots and tension in the muscles. This type of massage ball can be used all over the body.

Depending on how tight you are, it can be quite intense to use for the first time. However, if you stick with it you’ll see amazing results. I particularly like using this massage ball on my calves, hamstrings and quads.

These balls are very light to carry around if you want to take them on your travels, and they are also very cheap. For such a low price they are well worth trying out.

This ball is slightly softer and smaller than the La Crosse ball mentioned above. Both are essential myofascial release tools, however different body parts may require different sizes and levels of firmness. This ball has a soft foamy surface whilst still remaining firm enough to sink deep into the muscles.

This ball would be preferred over the La Crosse ball on areas that require a little more gentleness and precision. I tend to use this ball to roll over bony areas such as the hip and the upper back.

The TriggerPoint massage ball is also available in a larger size, which is also a lot firmer. I own both of these balls, however I find the smaller one to be much more versatile than the larger one. However, if you are looking for a larger massage ball this is the one to get.

Peanut Massage Ball

The peanut massage ball is a wonderful tool for rolling down the spine which is particularly useful for fixing a stiff back. That being said, I have also found a lot of relief from rolling my quads, calves, forearms and triceps on it.

Heavy Duty Resistance Bands

If you’re working on correcting your posture or fixing weak muscles you will no doubt find these bands of some benefit. Here’s a couple of examples where I have used them:

  • Increasing hamstring flexibility
  • Improving shoulder posture via a band pull apart exercise
  • Increasing rotator cuff strength by tying one end to a support and pulling at the band

They are available in a variety of different strengths so you’ll have to find the best one for you. The first one I bought was a little strong for me, so I bought another one with slightly less tension.

Their low price makes them an essential gym tool to have.

Small Duty Resistance Bands

These bands are great for adding increased resistance to simple exercises. For example, if you are working on activating your glutes by doing clamshells, once you get stronger you can wrap these bands around your thighs to make it more challenging. You may not need to use them everyday, but they are so low priced they are worth having.

Square 36 Exercise Mat

In the past I’ve gone through several cheap mats that have either ripped, lost their shape or not had the right surface of thickness. At first I was apprehensive about putting down 3 x4 times the price of most mats, however I have not regretted this one bit. This mat is perfect for all things including, yoga, stretching, exercising, jumping and doing cardio training.
